[Warden Filter]

Nygma's in Zero, and I'm leaving him down there for the full week. If anyone has any objections, feel free to let me know.

We're still getting the details on exactly what happened, so if anyone has questions, I'll answer them to the best of my ability.

[And edited in after his talk with Kay:] Has anyone noticed Nygma not knowing about stuff going on on the warden filter, but recently being up to speed on what we've been talking about?

[After dropping Nygma off in Zero, Dick pinged Tim asking for Kay's cabin number and then headed down to talk this out with someone he knew would take it seriously. The whole thing really didn't sit well with Dick, because had this just been a murdering someone who murdered my friend type deal, why was Nygma putting an emphasis on him being demoted for it, when Dick was pretty sure he'd been an inmate since he'd come back. The facts all pointed to it, and while he'd never specifically called him out on it, he'd figured other people had noticed, too.

He knocked on Kay's door and waited for him to answer it.]

[It's a normal looking door with a peephole even, but the peephole is a camera, and Dick might get a feeling of familiarity out of the way the five locks hiss as they come loose and then the door swings open.

The inside is very normal- green wallpaper. Fireplace. Bookcases with antique furniture. Kay's at at desk with a computer with a holographic screen, though, and once Dick's inside he presses the button to close the door.]

How well do you know this version of Dr. Crane, Grayson? [He ends up being referred to with a coppish title there. It's meant well.]

[It does, and Dick steps into the room and looks around a little bit, partially out of curiosity, and partly out of conditioning. Always be familiar with your surroundings in case something goes horribly wrong.

Not that it was going to, so when Kay gets straight to business, Dick immediately follows suit.]

Not very. I know he was a psychiatrist, he comes from a world where it's just Batman running the show, and he did used to do the whole fear gas thing, but for the most part, I try to give him space because to be honest, he kind of gets on my nerves.

He's a pain in the ass sometimes. [Yeah, Kay knows that.] But the thing is, I've been getting him to apologize more, and other than a couple of instances he's figured out those fights he starts for no good reason are a really bad idea.

Not just that, if he sees someone violent like Arthas? Usually he turns the other way. He won't go into port because he's worried about somethin' happenin' to him. When we stopped in Gotham and he was looking for his own cure to the serum? He had me escort him around everywhere. Part of our very first talk was about how he doesn't like fuckin' getting killed by the other inmates here.

Why would a guy like that walk into a situation with a man who publicly touted his desire to kill everyone on the ship to prove some inane point on the network?

He wouldn't. Crane's a pain in the ass, but he's not stupid. [And anyone directyl approaching Ladd seemed to be a stupid idea, the guy wasn't exactly a pinnacle of stability.]

Back in January, when David, Riddick and Mercer kidnapped me? I was in the infirmary afterward, and Nygma showed up, but he didn't know why or how I was hurt. I'd warden filtered the post saying I'd been bitten by a snake and that the three of them were on the loose. And when he got back here after Beatty graduated, he didn't know why he was on the Barge again, the Admiral pulled him in in the middle of a phone conversation. I know that's not really conclusive proof? But I've been here long enough that I think I can pretty safely say I've never seen a returning warden be kind of confused about why they were back on the Barge.

[Which means...] I think he's been an inmate since he's come back. So, why is he trying to frame this as a demotion? And why would the Admiral have demoted him now instead of when he tortured Arthas in revenge for torturing him?

Do you think you could find out if there's any other warden filtered stuff he'd missed? Because if he's buddy buddy with Ladd in any way... I got a hunch.

But my guess? Vanity. Wants to look like he went down for doing something noble.

Maybe. I don't know, something just doesn't feel right to me. And I could try, but I feel like investigating that after the fact might be harder, if polling other people about noticing anything unusual doesn't turn up anything.

What's your hunch?

It's a far-fetched one. But if he suddenly does know what was going on on the warden filter after not having known before, I think he might be the one Ladd gave Prefect's journal to. [He's assuming now that he gave it away.]

And if I found enough evidence I'd go through his room to check. Even if it did put people's panties in a twist. I don't want my inmate thinking that someone's his friend that might dick him over just to look like a "good guy".

...I'm really confused.

He said he got demoted. Was he ever a Warden this time around?

I seriously don't think so. Back when David, Riddick and Mercer nabbed me, he didn't know what had happened, and I'd warden filtered the post telling people I'd been attacked by a snake, and when he got back here after Beatty graduated, he didn't seem to realize he was back on the Barge, which never happens for wardens.

But apparently he seems to think other people thought he was a warden? So I don't know. Which frankly, makes him conveniently turning his friend's murder into "oh look, the Admiral's decided I'm too mean to be a warden anymore" seem even worse.

Not to sound terrible, but honestly that's what it's starting to sound like to me. I mean, don't you think it's a little convenient that Ladd yanked a comm, gave it to someone, and now he's involved with someone who I'm pretty sure has been pretending to be a warden for months claiming to have been demoted for avenging a friend?

Yeah, after I saw him get back here mid-conversation I just figured 'demoted' and then I kinda quit paying attention.

I know it's all in your freakishly overcapable hands and everything, but anything I can do to help?

[He nods slowly.] Do you know what time point it was before Eddie came back? What was going on in his life?

[She's kinda in a terrible mood, so she has the attitude of: OF COURSE. BAD SHIT ALWAYS HAPPENS. :|]

...So, uh, remember when some mystery attacker jumped me and broke my arm on my birthday?

I didn't exactly announce it to the public but said mystery attacker also stole my warden item for a few days. It was really soon after he came back to the barge, too.

Not specifically. Everyone from my universe is at least a year ahead of me, but Tim said he'd really backslid at his point in the timeline when I told him I thought he was an inmate.

Did you ever figure out who nabbed Prefect's comm? Kay thinks it might have been Nygma.

And you never found out who it was? How did you get your item back?

It was returned to me all anonymously.

And now that I think of it, he totally visited me in the infirmary when I was getting patched up! I think he was trying to see if I suspected him! I knew it was weird that he was acting all extra-nice.

[UGH noise.] Y'know what would be funny. Putting people in the stocks. Throwing tomatoes and stuff.

Honestly, I'd rather just toss him back in Arkham. This is starting to get a whole new level of sick.

Can't say for sure but I'd endorse that. Didn't know me all that well, called me 'dear', was openly contemptuous. Sounded like Nygma. Here. [And she'll just either filter him in on this conversation or copy-paste it or whatever it is you do, including his original message to her.]

[Shrug. Then a little weakly:]

Be careful who you say that to, you might get called out on being a ... villain-racist.

I definitely want to pass that information along to Kay, if that's okay. And you know I'm more than willing to listen if you need someone to complain to about what happened. [Not to sound like a network stalker or anything. :V]
