So, I guess I should probably get around to introducing myself or something. I'm Dick, and I'm a new warden around here. Seems like an... interesting place so far.

... Sooooo, does anyone know when I'm actually supposed to get assigned an inmate to keep an eye on?

Sure, I've known him since I was a kid. Guy's practically my uncle.

And, uh, I might have pictures. Somewhere. [He's a messy packer/person in general, so where they are is anyone's guess.]

I guess I've heard of crossover stuff, but I didn't know you guys were so close. That's pretty weird. Er, sorry. Super Man was a different comic series. I don't have any of his stuff, but.. I never read one where you guys actually met or talked.

[Amazing what you learn about comics by talking to the people in them.] It's up to you if you want to share them, obviously. But if you find some and you're willing, I'd be totally interested in seeing them.

Huh. That's weird. I mean, it's not like we hang out every day or anything, but we've definitely worked together.

Maybe that was in the later years. I only have the stuff I got when I was a kid.

[She smiles.] You mean, besides as the original Bat-sidekick? [Pause.] Were you really in the circus?

Maybe. I'm not really sure how the whole comic book thing works time-wise.

I was. They seriously have everything about me in these things?

They probably just make it up as they go.. it's a lot of different artists and stuff.

I'm guessing it's probably not all accurate, just like the movies are pretty different from the books and the Harvey Dent that was here wasn't really like the Two Face in the comics either, but there seems to be a good amount of truth, yeah.. Does it bother you that I know?

You specifically? No. But the fact that it's out there for anyone to read about? Definitely. I mean, I've spent my entire life protecting my identity, and to find out anyone who picks up a comic book could figure it out's pretty freaky.

... What was Harvey like?

Yeah, I get that. It would freak me out if people knew about me too.

[She pauses, reaching forward to take a sip of her coffee again, mostly as a way to stall. Hayley slowly sets the mug down.] He.. He did change, from when I met him to when he left. When I first met him? He was still nice. He was a good guy, friendly. He cared. I mean, he had another personality.. Two Face.. but he wasn't Two Face all the time. And with what happened to him, you could hardly blame him for developing a coping mechanism. Oh-- That's, uh.. Sorry, I'm not really comfortable telling you what happened to him. I shouldn't have brought it up.

No, I.. I don't mind talking about him? He was my best friend. I just.. don't really feel comfortable telling you things he probably wouldn't share with most people. I can tell you more about he was like, if you want, or try to answer specific questions.. But the Joker really messed him up.

And, uh.. I guess since I know a little bit about you, I'd be willing to tell you some stuff about me too, if you wanted. I mean, it's only fair, right? I just don't really think I can share his secrets.

Yeah. The Joker does that. [This is said completely without humor, because seriously, Dick's pretty used to him completely ruining other people's lives.]

I guess I could start with "what brings you here", but I could see where that would get really personal really quickly.

[She looks away. Yeah, personal.]

[Zero judgment, because hey, even if that probably means you don't have the whole 'Thou shalt not kill or Bruce will kick your sorry ass' rule to live by, it's not like he's really in a position to judge at this point.]

No. [Her gaze snaps back to him, though she's not angry, just clarifying.] I never took the law into my own hands or whatever. It was all legal.. Well, okay, most of it. But I never seriously hurt or killed any of them.

[Anddd... he doesn't know what else to say, because he lacks the context to say she's right or question why she's here, because from what she just said, that doesn't sound all that different from what he does on a daily basis.]

[She forces a shrug to try to appear more nonchalant about the topic than she actually is.]

Where are you from?

California. I actually think the thing I miss the most here is probably palm trees. Or the temperature always being wet and warm.. I lived in Thousand Oaks, near L.A. I liked the sun.. The artificial light here all the time.. [She shakes her head dismissively.]

Yeah, I can definitely see that being kind of a downer after a while, especially after a year of being here.

Nineteen months. [She corrects, smile faltering. Sometimes she forgets how long it's been.] This place gets to you after awhile. But, like I said, there's totally nothing you can do about it, so.. you just.. keep going, I guess.
