America was originally a bunch of colonies that belonged to a bunch of countries in Europe, which is across the ocean. Jersey is the name of an island in one of those countries - England - and when the English got control of the specific colony from the Dutch, they named it New Jersey.
Doesn't make a whole lot of sense, since they're nothing alike, but hey.
I don't pretend to get the logic of it. But we've got a lot of places like that. New York, New England, New Mexico... A lot of towns have the same names too for the same reasons.
