[Dick doesn't really want to talk about the breach. He's been through enough of them already that being a semi trigger happy fed with a taste for justice isn't that weird, even if it's always unsettling to have all the extra memories floating around in your head.

The more pressing matter right now is:]

Has anyone seen Sara since the breach ended?

We should talk. [It's a conversation they probably should have had a long time ago, but. Better late than never?]

[Pretty much.

He's just going to be sticking to text for the foreseeable future, Dick. He doesn't trust actual words right now.]

Good mask. Good detective. Weak convictions.

[He gets it, and he's not going to push for something different, but will be sticking to voice because it's what he's more comfortable with. He's chatty, it's part of his charm. :c]

How so? [Obviously he knows what Dan did thanks to the file, but he still wants to get Rorschach's opinions on everything and really try to find a way to untangle all of this.]

Former strengths or later weakness?

[Because if he can hide behind vagueness and uncertainty, affected ignorance, he doesn't have to examine it too closely.]

[He'll keep pushing, regardless, but he is curious to hear both points.]

Because it's a conversation we should have had a long time ago.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing? [He says it like he's teasing, but he does want to know. It's sort of a weird thing to say.]

[A long pause.]

You didn't answer the question. [It's gently prompting rather than being accusatory.]

[You realize you sound five years old when you use that argument right. :|]

[Bah. He is a grown man, he can use whatever arguments he wants. So there.]

Everyone does. In the end. Sacrifice convictions for convenience. Gains. To avoid being on losing side.

[Don't make him consider putting you on time out.]

I'm not sure you're being fair on him. Or on yourself, really.

Being exactly as fair as justified. When faced with truth of Veidt's machinations, Dreiberg sided with unnecessary death of millions. Voiced required protest to appease morals but accepted actions. Betrayed the mask, Richard. Betrayed the NAME.

And you don't think he felt badly about it? I mean, being faced with it's either the death of millions of innocent people, or nuclear war between the USSR and the United States is kind of the ultimate rock and a hard place decision.

Wasn't their decision to make. Could have backfired. Could have sped decisions of men with itchy fingers. Still might. Actions have consequences. Blaming Manhattan might work now but human nature doesn't change. Won't last, only prolonging inevitable. And then back to beginning. Innocent lives sacrificed for nothing.

Or it might buy people the time to work out their differences. I'm not going to try to tell you war will be over and everyone will live in peace and harmony, but I'd rather live in a world that isn't constantly on the brink of total annihilation.

You can't go through life constantly expecting the worst of people, or only focusing on the bad things they do. I understand that you've seen a lot of horrible stuff and it's hard to focus on the good things you see, but it is out there. Like on Risa, remember? And Dan wasn't a bad guy. He had flaws, sure, but we all do. He didn't want those people - or you - to die, but he couldn't have stopped Veidt, either. Hell, even if he'd tried to expose what he'd done, Veidt would have had him taken out, or the world would be right back where you started at. At least if he's alive, he can work to help people who need it and try to make sure things don't fall apart again.

Better to die doing what's right then allow it to go uncontested. Can't condone killing for POSSIBILITY of resolving global conflict. Doesn't justify means. Stakes too great to gamble. Could have done more. Could have objected more loudly, could have TRIED. Rolled over like a dog instead. Got the girl. Hollywood ending. All for promise of holding silence. Can't blame for acting human. Could never expect otherwise.

[A pause in the typing. Considering. Weighing his words.]

Hoped.

I know. And that's okay. But maybe he realized the would would be better off if it had someone looking out for it still, and making sure Veidt wasn't going to pull a stunt like that again. [Instead of getting him and Laurie killed and thus ensuring no one but Veidt would know about it. :V]
