batmanschmatman: (Stop the world I want to get off.)

[Dick doesn't really want to talk about the breach. He's been through enough of them already that being a semi trigger happy fed with a taste for justice isn't that weird, even if it's always unsettling to have all the extra memories floating around in your head.

The more pressing matter right now is:]

Has anyone seen Sara since the breach ended?

[Private to Rorschach]

We should talk. [It's a conversation they probably should have had a long time ago, but. Better late than never?]

[ooc: I promise I'm getting to my backtags/new posts I should tag into, I just wanted to put this up before time got too far away from me. <3]

[She leans into him comfortably, her brow furrowing at the idea that she was sort of...there, in this other universe the breach created, but...not. She definitely doesn't have any of the lingering memories she did after Floodholme, of any point in her other self's life.]

Bizarre. [She glances at him.] Actually fine or 'I don't want you to worry' fine?

Was he the Clint or the Erik in that scenario? [Because both options are shot through with 'Inmate material'. Hell, he could even be the Narvin, depending on what happened after the handover.]

What happened to him? On the Barge, I mean. [Although she suspects she knows, because if Dick had a graduation under his belt she sincerely doubts he'd still be here.]

[Sara nods. Apparently the willingness to believe that some Inmates just get let off the hook - this guy, The Other Barbara - is part of how you make it through the day here. Not that she's arguing. Sometimes you just have to tell yourself things you can't prove to make it through the day.]

Guess we can add 'shitty choice of Inmates' to 'lousy driving' and 'bad attitude'.

[She makes a sort of awkward half-laugh sound and scratches the side of her head.]

Yeah. Yeah, we are. [Deep breath, and a pause, because honestly she still has to shuffle things into a digestible order herself.] Long story short, Xavier agreed to help me try to understand what the hell it is I've gotten myself into with this thing. [She lifts her right hand illustratively.]

He kind of...broke something open in my head. It's hard to explain, but I remember - deep down, I sort of know about the bearers who came before me, now. All the way back to the first one. And even before that, to when it was....born.

Really.

[Another pause, because this next part? She struggles to believe herself.]

There are - in my world, there are two...universal forces, I guess you'd call them. Light and dark - not necessarily good and bad, just light and dark. The Angelus and the Darkness. They were at war since the beginning of everything, but around the time humans were pretty new as a species, they had a truce.

[She turns her wrist over, watching the light play on the metal. The silver makes it look cleaner, sharper.]

This is their offspring. The entity they created to maintain balance between them and stop them tearing the universe apart.

[There's a slight blankness in her tone which says 'I have not yet internalised the full and terrifying implications of how powerful this thing necessarily is'.]

Yeah, me too.

[And now she understands what it meant what it told her it wasn't her time to know, because - part of her could really be happy to go back to not being aware of all this. It also puts her threat to make a deal with the Admiral to destroy it into sharp perspective.]

But, I got what I wanted. I mean - now I'm scared for a whole new set of reasons, but at least I don't have to fear the unknown any more.

....yeah. Yeah, I am. Just...reeling a little, that's all.

[She smiles at him, and it's faint but genuine.]

I know it's not the first time I've said this, but I feel like I should tell you thanks for putting up with all my crazy baggage.

You're sweet. [Which is something he's definitely said to her. She pecks him on the cheek - nothing more than that while her mouth feels like something died in it - and then braces her arms against the mattress.]

Right. I'm gonna try to get up, and if I can stay upright I'm going to brush my teeth and get dressed and then see about...dinner. Lunch? I have no idea what time it is.

[Weird, but it makes her laugh.] Yeah, after being locked up in my own head so long I think I need it. [She stands up, and although her legs kind of go 'no' for a second she stays on her feet and then heads off into her bathroom.]

Just give me ten minutes, alright?

[The eye-bleeding paint job is still there, but it's now covered by a patchwork of patterned construction paper in neutral shades that she raided from the art room. Given that neither crafts nor DIY are really her thing she's pretty pleased with how it came out.]

Isn't it? I can actually sleep in here now. Makes a nice change.

[She brushes her teeth and washes her face efficiently and comes back out into her room to get dressed, tossing her robe over Dick's face in the process like she wants or needs any modesty.]
