[Dick is still sorting through all the stuff at his house. He's maybe starting to get a little obsessive about it, and probably would look a little crazy to anyone who wasn't from the Barge, as he's got clues to his fake life sprawled out around him on the floor. Not that you guys can see it, but to any passersby, he looks a little nuts. Or at least like he's getting started on spring cleaning a little early by ripping everything off the shelves.]

Anyone else have some pictures of people from back home around the house? Like, not Barge people? I'm trying to figure out how closely this place parallels our home universes, which obviously isn't all that much, but I'm still curious.

I mean, obviously we're all here, and some of us have pretty developed family units that aren't like our original ones at all, but what about the people we left back home? Do they exist here too, or is this place just populated with strangers and us?

[There's a specific reasoning behind this questioning, but most of you aren't getting any reasons as to why this is suddenly bothering him.]

Oh, sorry. A cop that used to be here. He was from Chicago. I didn't envy him one bit.

Chicago's not so bad. A good friend of mine started his career there.

I suppose it isn't, really. Your imagination gets the better of you, half the time. Especially when all you've got to go on is one friend's impression and nothing else.

Well, to be fair, I'm going off of no where's as bad as Gotham, so I might be biased.

I imagine Gotham is... [entirely fictional? Bound to be full of crime?] quite busy, compared to most places.

It keeps its officers on their toes.

I really don't envy you then, either.

Technically, I wasn't a Gotham cop, but Bludhaven's just as bad. It's only about twenty minutes out of Gotham. But I liked my job.

Oh, right. I liked mine too, and I doubt I wouldn't have liked it if I was in Glasgow or somewhere.

What was your department like?

Ah. I was a rural policeman for the West Highland Police. I... me and about four other people worked in a police station which covered one small town and nine small coastal islands. The whole place was generally quiet. The most dramatic thing that usually happened was incidents with shotguns and trespassers or stolen sheep.

So, it wasn't the most exciting place in the world, but someone's got to police it.

Hey, exciting's got a lot of different definitions, and it's not exactly for everyone. Sounds like you had a good thing going.

So, how does that work, exactly? Do you get to go home at all if you want to, or are you kinda stuck here until you decide you want to move on to... where ever we go when we're done?

You don't have to answer if you don't want to, I mean, it's obviously a weird thing to think about, but I was kind of thinking about that the other day.

I'm stuck here, basically. Until I'm done with Elle, and then... well, I'm not discussing the rest of that. But that's the only way I get to leave.

I... don't like thinking about it much, but that's the answer.

Can I ask whether it was what you wanted to hear?

Well, not exactly, I guess. Costigan and I were talking the other day about some stuff and it kind of hit me for the first time that I can leave and come back pretty much whenever I want to, but not everyone has that option. It kind of got me thinking about what happens to people who've died when they just vanish.

It's something that worries me, especially about the inmates who just disappear. I do believe in an afterlife, and believe that is where they'd go.

But I certainly pray for people more when they leave than when they die here.

It must be frustrating to put all this effort into trying to help someone get better or to improve yourself and then your partner just disappearing.

It is. I mean... It's never happened to me, but my inmate has had... three, four people before me. It's not right that people just disappear on anyone, one way or another.
