Okay, so, a flood turned hostile takeover attempt, another sinister plot, a port... now do you think we'll get a little bit of downtime?

I know people had their issues with port, but seriously, at least for the most part, barring a misadventure here or there, most of us got out pretty unscathed. That's got to be worth something on the scale of boring to traumatic.

... And it was kind of fun, being a cop again. Even if there wasn't exactly much chasing down bad guys involved.

I mean, not that I'm saying "sign me up for a universe transfer", but I guess all I'm trying to say is I'll take what I can get.

Guess it did hit a little too close to home for a lot of people.

Aye. And normally you can distance yourself from a flood, a port, I guess. For some people, there was very little distance this time.

All things considered? I think I got off lucky. I'd probably have been a little more shaken up if it'd been my real family.

Aye, I think so. Someone might have had to drag me back if it was mine.

Do you always have to come back on the Barge? Like, has anyone ever stayed behind?

I am fairly sure you can't. I've never heard of it happening, but this doesn't stop my inmate trying to escape. I wouldn't want to take any chances.

Probably a good idea. Enough people disappear as is without having the option to just jump ship every time we pull into port.

Exactly, and the most recent disappearance... Abigail came back to the boat with me, then disappeared.

So I'm not sure what to make of that.

I hope she's safe. It sucks when people don't even get to say goodbye.

I know, and especially when you don't know where they've gone - or worse, you do, and it's awful.

I've sort of been thinking about that a lot lately. Not that I'm, you know, actively worried about it happening, but I know there are a couple people I'm friendly with who don't really have the option of just... going home and being safe. I wish there was something we could do about it.

I... I wish there was too, but the only ways of counteracting that here, I'd think, are taking someone home with you, or exchanging your deal for it, or, if you're an inmate, choosing to go somewhere else entirely when you graduate.

But that implies everyone gets choice when and where they leave.

So... you can exchange your deal.

I'm fairly sure of it. I've never changed mine [because lol, he doesn't have one. Long story he's not telling.], but it's perfectly possible. You can just send the Admiral a message, from what I know, ask him to change it. Others have done it.

These things should be written down somewhere.

No one's written a "Everything You Need to Know About the Good Ship, Barge" book yet?

It's been discussed now and then, but it's hard enough to find time to do small organisational efforts, let alone write a whole guide book.

I mean. If everyone was interested in helping people out in one sense or another, we could do both, but as it is? Only a handful of people (a sizable one, don't get me wrong) are interested in doing that kind of thing.

And floods, and things going wrong, and Lord knows what else don't help.

Things like that do tend to get complicated when your sense of normalcy is constantly in flux.

Losing your sense of self, or getting thrown into a crisis every week does tend to get in the way of any kind of bureaucracy.

I'm sure some people manage okay. [Meaning, well, Bruce. But he was... Bruce. And therefore sort of an enigma.]

I mean, back in the real world, anyway. I'm not sure how that would go down here.

Well, I'm trying my best to manage. It's... well, I'd love someone around who could manage better, but I imagine they're rare.

You never know. We could get lucky next time the admiral decides to pick more people up.
