So, in light of Amanda's most recent network post, and some of the stuff Hoffman said to me while he was in the infirmary, I think it might be a good idea for someone to go through his room and make sure he doesn't have anything dangerous stored in there that we don't know about. There's some really bad blood between these two, and I'm pretty sure no one but the two of them really wants them to just keep killing each other every week.

I'd be happy to look through Hoffman's room myself, but if anyone's got particularly strong feelings about wanting to help, I wouldn't say no to an extra pair of hands.

And speaking of weapons and all that, does anyone actually know how she got her hands on the knife in the first place? I know she's unassigned, but I thought people were trying to keep an eye on that, all things considered.

[He was quiet for a beat before giving her a small smile.] Seriously, it's okay to feel crappy about it. I know it seems like maybe it would be better if you didn't get upset, but... I wasn't kidding. Being bothered by this stuff is a good thing.

[Ariadne looked up at him for a couple moments before offering a smile in return.]

I'll get used to it.

... That's not necessarily a good thing.

[Ariadne shifted her weight. She didn't want to keep reacting like this, and for a brief moment she felt a little like a burden on Dick. She stared hard over at him before tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.]

That's what you said, yeah, but I have to be able to do my job. And I have to let you do your job, and my friends do theirs.

[Dick treated her to an eyebrow raise before going back to sorting through stuff, still keeping a close watch on her out of the corner of his eye.]

Who says you're not letting me do my job?

[Ariadne blinks for a couple moments at that eyebrow.]

I do. A little bit, yeah. I do.

What makes you think that?

[Ariadne tucks some hair behind her ear before reaching behind her and closing Amanda's door for a little bit of privacy.]

I mean... [she hesitates for a moment, her fingers spread wide as she gets her thoughts together. She didn't know if she was jumping to conclusions or not but figured it was safe to put herself out there.] This'll blow over, but if it doesn't, I don't want you to worry.

[And that just seems wrong, so she gives a sort of air push as she tries to re-organize herself.] I'm not trying to say that I'm someone you worry about.

[She's maybe a little stressed.]

[That got him to stop again, and he turned around to face her, leaning against the wall a little, his expression earnest and serious without appearing angry or frustrated. His tone was very frank.]

I'm a cop, Ariadne. Or, I used to be, anyway, and that kind of conditioning doesn't really go away, so I'm going to be concerned and want to get involved in this kind of situation regardless of the circumstances. I'll be worried and want to help whether or not this blows over, and I'll be worried and want to help when we get new stuff thrown at us. I do it to everyone I care about, and it drives some people crazy, but it's just what I do. [Namely, if he ever got particularly protective of people who knew they could actually take care of themselves in a crisis situation. He knew first hand that kind of behavior was annoying, and he was sort of okay with accepting that someone like Tim was more than capable of taking care of himself, but even that didn't stop him from being concerned sometimes.]

I've never been good at sitting on the sidelines and hoping everything will turn out okay, and I don't want to be good at it. Getting involved is what I do.

[Ariadne met his gaze, forcing herself to fold her hands as he spoke. When he finished, she nodded, as it was something she felt herself. She couldn't sit on the sidelines and wait for Cobb to take the team into a dangerous situation where they would be risking their lives, not without someone who knew how firm a hold Mal's projection had on his subconscious. She had to follow him down in, for the team's sake, not his. Even now on the Barge it still applied. Eames had said that he didn't see her as a friend, and she was mostly alright with that, but it didn't change the loyalty she felt for him, or Arthur for that matter.]

It doesn't drive me crazy. I just didn't want to take you from your job here. I'm okay with it.

You're not taking me from my job, stop saying that. [It was said jokingly as he turned back to finish the investigation, but he seriously meant it.]

Just because I'm partnered up with an inmate doesn't mean I can't do other stuff with my time. You really think Costigan's sitting by himself wondering where I am right now, pining away that I'm spending time with someone other then him?

[Ariadne continued to stand by the door, hesitating before smiling just a little.]

No, I don't.

[But the thought made her smile a little wider, despite never meeting Costigan.]

Good, because I'm pretty sure he'd break my face again if he heard I got that rumor going around.

[Finally, he stepped back into the center of the room and shrugged, rubbing the back of his neck as he gave another look around.] Looks like it's clean.

[That got a quiet chuckle out of Ariadne and when Dick stepped back, she nodded.]

I'll keep asking about where she got the knife, but I don't think she'll tell me.
