[This whole post is backdated to after Slade's arrival post and this fight.]

Just a note for anyone who's missed this memo: people have contacted the Admiral about what happens to people who disappear before. He's said he doesn't control when they vanish any more than we do. I know we don't really have reason to trust his word on stuff like this, but I figured it's something worth hearing.

There have been plenty of tough cases who have graduated and a lot of crappy wardens who have overstayed their welcome, and the Admiral didn't get rid of them. It'd save a lot of time and energy if people could keep that in mind next time anyone starts making accusations that someone got kicked off because the Admiral gave up on them, or thinks they've been doing a lousy job.

Slade's here. He was here before until about a year ago, and he was actually making progress by the time he got booted off the ship. [Sort of. He thinks. Maybe.

[Dick wasn't overly pleased with how this had gone down. Bruce acting like a jackass wasn't anything new or unexpected, in so many ways, and he was an inmate. This sort of behavior was to be expected.

But Dean and Faith were wardens, and it always, always bothered Dick when confrontations between wardens turned into what was basically a playground brawl. They were supposed to be the role models here, and he got that both of them were upset, but calling names and intentionally looking to piss the other off was ridiculous. He might side more with Dean because he was his friend, and he didn't particularly like Faith, but they were both definitely in the wrong here.

He turned to Dean after the other two had left, expression and voice still level and serious rather than angry, and gestured for the other man to show him his injured arm.]

I am beginning to wonder what the Admiral is capable of controlling, other than initial recruitment.

[Okay, that's sort of not completely true. She's been wondering for a while now.]

[Barbara's gazes at him for a moment before speaking, expression subtly concerned.] Do you know how long it's been for him, since he was on the Barge?

You're definitely not alone. I personally feel like he doesn't do much at all besides that.

[Dick shrugs.] He vanished about a year ago, and he made it sound like no time had passed for him in the mean time. If anyone's heard different, it's news to me. He was here for maybe two years before he vanished.

[Look Dick she can privatize things all on her own aren't you proud?]

Last time I... saw him, he wanted me dead. Think he'll... try anything?

[Because honestly she doesn't really want to deal with that at all. And then, as an afterthought,]

I recently spoke with a new inmate who expressed some valid concerns: if the Admiral is not overseeing many Warden's actions, the autonomy many of us are given may be seen as a viable concern to many inmates who lack the ability to trust.

Perhaps if this were addressed to the Wardens as a collective, we may be able to overcome this misconception of the Admiral sending 'faulty' Wardens away.

[Jean doesn't quite meet his eyes, her frown deep and sombre.]

He should at least know what happens to them. He could tell us that much.

The most simple explanation is they go back to - to what they were doing, and - for Inmates, that means... [That means dying.]

Slade? I don't think we've heard of him in my world.

Should I avoid talking to him?

[A slight nod.] That's good, then. Nothing to make him backslide.

Any specific pointers on how to deal with him? You know him better than I do. [She knows everything about him, of course, but Dick is the one with real experience.]

That's been tried in the past. The problem is that you're always going to have a couple wardens who aren't interested in being held accountable for their actions, and they'll resist or ignore any system you try to put in place to control them. And besides, there's no real way for us to punish another warden. If the Admiral was able to step in and make wardens responsible for their actions, maybe it would be different. But until then, the only way to really control the situation is to be the best warden you can be, and try to do the right thing for everyone here if you can. [Which is why Dick is so irritated with this whole Dean vs. Faith thing. >>]

And at the end of the day, even that might not be enough for some people. Sometimes someone needs to make a call that's the right thing for their inmate or for you, and people will flip out and say they're a terrible warden and should be demoted. It's all really subjective.

I wouldn't go that far. This is the Barge, if people want to find a way to backslide, they'll find a way to backslide. [And, you know. There's Bruce and Jason and God knows how well he'll mesh with the new people on board, or if he'll get a lousy warden like Bourne again.]

Honestly, I just try to give him space. He doesn't like being in close quarters with us any more than we like being stuck with him, and breathing down his neck or trying to meddle in what he's doing will just piss him off more. I'm not saying don't pay any attention to him? But space is a good thing, here.

No. He doesn't work that way. If he wanted to kill you, it was for a contract, and that doesn't apply here. He's not a whackjob the same way other people are. [He won't name names. But.]

And sure, of course. I'm glad you liked them.

That is what happens, usually. Wardens or people who weren't dead before they got here who vanish don't just get punted into the ether. He's not that irresponsible.

[Aya listens patiently, with Dick's explanation basically confirming her suspicious. It was far from a perfect system, and unfortunately, the one person would could do something about it...wasn't.]

I do not seek to punish, however. Merely offer additional support. If not for those who would automatically reject, than at least for the remaining populace who may be more open to the idea. For example, I have come across multiple instances in my own position where I have been incapable of understanding the logic behind certain words and actions. [Mostly because Pyro doesn't really do logic] It was only through the advice of others that I was able to calculate the best possible course of action in the wake of what had occured.

It is just a theory.

[A wry smile.] I meant before he got here. God knows there's enough opportunities now.

[She nods, swift and sincere.] Noted.

Do you know if any old friends or allies of his are still around?

He's a mercenary and assassin who's got a beef with the Titans and by extension, with most of the cape and cowl community. He'll probably leave you alone unless you get on his nerves, but you can take him in a fight unless he's got Kryptonite on hand, which he shouldn't.

But the dead are still dead.

...I know that's not his fault. But if he can do all of this - if he can restores their lives when they graduate, if he can fulfil all of our deals, if he can run this ship...

It just doesn't seem fair. [Of course, very little about the Barge does. She thought she was used to it.]

I was Ravager's contract. Almost killed her. Not a... whackjob, [Dick stop teaching her weird words.] but he was... mad. Made it personal.

[Still, if he was here before and Dick doesn't think he's a threat, it doesn't matter much. She'll just avoid him, just like she would have even if he had wanted a fight.]

Saw, um... the one with the shoe. The glass one. Cinderella?

I think that's a great idea. It's definitely easy to feel overwhelmed by your inmate if they've got a lot of issues you're not overly familiar with, I think creating some kind of support network for people who don't have close friends who can help or other people to call on specifically would help.

[Even though Dick cannot see, Aya smiles on her end when he agrees with her.]

It is perhaps the closest thing to an Organization we may be able to produce.

No. There's been a lot of turn over since he left, there's maybe only thirty or so of us left from when he was here last.

He and Bruce are gonna be a problem.

I don't think it'll be an issue, but definitely stay on your toes. [Which should be obvious and entirely unnecessary to say, because Slade's a killer and he doesn't like capes.]

I made sure to ask for a book with that one in it in particular.

It's definitely not for the people who are just here because they made some bad choices in their life. But if someone hasn't figured out how to be a productive member of society and they'd just go back to committing mass murder if they came back to life? Honestly, I'm okay with them not being a position to hurt other people anymore.

It's definitely better than nothing.

The Titans...? I- I'm sorry. Things are so different in my world, I wish I could be of more help.
