It you somehow manage to convince yourself of it in this, of all places, then do let me know your secret. You cannot swing a Hobbe in this place without hitting another person.

Do you not know of them? Beastly little imp creatures, supposedly made from children whose souls have been drained away.
No?

Oh yeah, I'm really familiar with them.
...
Sorry. That's not what I meant to say. It's the flood.

That's odd. I haven't felt any stronger urge than normal to lie to people. Why does it strike everyone else?

The admiral preselects who it will affect and who it doesn't.

Sorry. It happens when people ask me questions.

So it's random, then. Interesting.

I guess so. Apparently someone's doing research into why and how it happens, but I've been told there hasn't been a lot of progress.

Something you'll have to tell me again once this silliness is over and done with, so that I'll know you're genuine.
But if that is the case, it does not necessarily stand to reason that knowing
why
will make it any better.

You don't find it comforting to know how something works?

I tend to take comfort in more ...
tangible
things.

you'll lie.

So, where are you from? I've never heard of Hobbes before.

The nation of Albion, originally, though I've been other places. Lived
far
too long to stay in one place.

This is the part in the conversation where I would ask for information from you in kind. Since I cannot, you will have to anticipate me.

I'm from Gotham City, New Jersey. It's pretty much one of the most crime ridden cities in America.

I cannot say I have heard of America. Or New Jersey.
It makes one wonder on the existence of an Old Jersey, however.
