Just a note for anyone who's missed this memo: people have contacted the Admiral about what happens to people who disappear before. He's said he doesn't control when they vanish any more than we do. I know we don't really have reason to trust his word on stuff like this, but I figured it's something worth hearing.

There have been plenty of tough cases who have graduated and a lot of crappy wardens who have overstayed their welcome, and the Admiral didn't get rid of them. It'd save a lot of time and energy if people could keep that in mind next time anyone starts making accusations that someone got kicked off because the Admiral gave up on them, or thinks they've been doing a lousy job.

Slade's here. He was here before until about a year ago, and he was actually making progress by the time he got booted off the ship. [Sort of. He thinks. Maybe.

[Dick wasn't overly pleased with how this had gone down. Bruce acting like a jackass wasn't anything new or unexpected, in so many ways, and he was an inmate. This sort of behavior was to be expected.

But Dean and Faith were wardens, and it always, always bothered Dick when confrontations between wardens turned into what was basically a playground brawl. They were supposed to be the role models here, and he got that both of them were upset, but calling names and intentionally looking to piss the other off was ridiculous. He might side more with Dean because he was his friend, and he didn't particularly like Faith, but they were both definitely in the wrong here.

He turned to Dean after the other two had left, expression and voice still level and serious rather than angry, and gestured for the other man to show him his injured arm.]

I don't think we have any reason to doubt the Admiral about that. I just can't decide if it's better to know or better to think there was a way to trick him into booting us out.

Why do you want to get booted out? I'd figure more inmates aren't all that eager to get back to being dead if they've got an alternative.

I don't. [Have an alternative back home; she's dead.] So it doesn't matter to me. Truth be told, things are better here than they were at home...but if the wrong person goes home, I'm shit out of luck.

I'm going to guess your PSA was about Slade.

What? No. Faith apparently thought wardens disappearing meant that the Admiral was firing them.

Huh, missed that one. Kind of weird that Slade turned up remembering everything. I thought that was a warden treat.

Nope. People on both sides of the fence can come back with or without memories, from different points in the timestream or thinking it was ten minutes ago and they don't get why their calendar suddenly says March instead of September.

[It's an intense relief just to have that little possibility. She still responds with sarcasm.] Aw, maybe it is a fair and just system after all.

Have you ever gone home?

Unless you count a couple days in an alternate Gotham where Bruce, me and a couple others were presumed dead and the city was in complete chaos - which I don't - I haven't.

...It's funny. I can't even think of it as Gotham without him there now. You'd think its key feature would be the crime rate.

Yours is different than the one we have here, right? Not just that he doesn't kill people.

Yeah. Although that's kind of a big difference.

[An unwilling snicker.] Yeah, I guess. ...Was he happier?

For the most part, yeah, considering he hadn't alienated everyone who ever cared about him.

What was he like when you first started working with him? [This she asks softly, aware it's a very personal question, but Catwoman at least has a reason for everything she does.]

[Dick doesn't really care, to be honest. Any hope of having a secret identity's been thrown out the window for a very, very long time by now, this isn't that hard to talk about compared to say, what happened with Blockbuster, and he doesn't have anything in particular against this Selina. So he's fine with discussing it.]

Well, he wasn't exactly thrilled I wanted to help out at first, but after he realized I wasn't going to stop just because he wanted me to, he figured training me was better than me going out on my own and getting myself killed. He was still all stoic and grouchy, but he'd lighten up and joke when things were quiet.

[She smiles, rests her chin on a hand so she can hide it behind her hand and look studious. She's normally very open with her smiles but, well. Not the fond ones.]

How'd you luck out and get him to tell you who he was?

I almost got myself killed going after the man who murdered my parents. He brought me back to the cave and gave me a talking to.

What was that like for you? I mean, Batman takes you to the cave.

I was more surprised when he pulled off the cowl and it was Bruce, to be honest. He hadn't really been around much when he first took me in, and I thought it was because he didn't really want a kid around and just did it for the publicity or something. Then I realized he was never around because he was trying to find Tony Zucco and bring him to justice.

[Selina smiles, pleased with that Bruce, knowing too well the surprise of finding out.]

I wanted to ask Alfred what it was like for him. Did Bruce tell him he wanted to go be a bat, or did he just catch him sleeping upside down one night?

I think he got the idea after he figured out dressing up in a sweater and a hat wasn't exactly the best way to scare the crap out of any thugs he wanted to go beat up.

...Did he really? [Wear the sweater and hat. Really?]

He's lucky he didn't get himself killed the first night he went out.

I can imagine. I know the bat suit gets in the way sometimes, but a sweater? How long did he keep that up?

I think he just went out like it once and then came up with the suit. Works a lot better.
