Okay, so, a flood turned hostile takeover attempt, another sinister plot, a port... now do you think we'll get a little bit of downtime?

I know people had their issues with port, but seriously, at least for the most part, barring a misadventure here or there, most of us got out pretty unscathed. That's got to be worth something on the scale of boring to traumatic.

... And it was kind of fun, being a cop again. Even if there wasn't exactly much chasing down bad guys involved.

I mean, not that I'm saying "sign me up for a universe transfer", but I guess all I'm trying to say is I'll take what I can get.

And hey, I think this port's the first time we've ever gotten to hang out that hasn't been interrupted by the Barge trying to collapse around us or something. Clearly a celebration is in order.

So... How's your shoulder?

My adoptive father does a lot of business overseas. When I was younger, I'd get dragged along sometimes, so I sort of had to pick up at least a couple to get by and be polite.

[He said it like it was no big deal - which it wasn't - but the more serious answer was that not only did it help whenever they had to fight R'as al Ghul on his home turf, but if any Russian mob bosses in Gotham decided to try and use the language as a code to catch them off guard, learning the language pretty much derailed that plan immediately.]

[So sneaky, Dick. So sneaky. Ariadne delicately switches over into French, which sometimes felt a little more comfortable than English.]

What about French?

I know French. Admittedly, a decent part of the work I got dragged along for was in Asia, so I'm maybe a little more comfortable with my Japanese, but I've spent a fair decent amount of time in France.

[Despite the brush off, it was still very clear that he was fluent and confident enough to continue at a regular conversational pace rather then stumbling or pausing to think of what to say next.]

[Ariadne raised an eyebrow, ever the more impressed with Dick. She even stopped mid-step to simply stare at him. He was smart, he was funny, he made her comfortable. It was everything rolled into one man. And her natural sense of curiosity swooned at the thought of peeling the layers back to see everything he had. To know him and let him know her in return.

A part of her mind, though, pushed away the idea of seeing him as solely a project. He was so much greater than that, incredible really and she worked to figure out just how to see Dick. A friend would be the first and obvious option, something more than that the second, but a third, vague and blurred idea, half-formed, excited her all the more.]

[Dick stopped when she did, looking at her curiously. He was - for the most part - pretty oblivious to what she could possibly be thinking about. Of course, he was a guy, and therefore not always smart about this kind of thing, but it had been proven his real blindspot or weak point or whatever it was were girls. Or women. Whatever.

So he just smiled and raised an eyebrow ironically at her too.]

What?

[Ariadne simply smiled, shaking her head.]

Nothing important.

[And she continued to move again, glancing away toward the sky briefly. Her heart swelled in her chest with sheer excitement.]

Have you been to Paris?

[He followed, shrugging casually.]

Yeah, a couple times. I mean, I travel a bit, but I do stick pretty close to home more often then not. Being a cop didn't really give me a ton of free time, you know?

[Ariadne nodded quietly.]

Did you see more of the world while you were on your sabbatical?

Yeah. It was pretty much the first family vacation we had in years, so we tried making the best of it.

[Even if he'd been recovering from a life threatening injury, Tim had been traumatized, and Bruce still couldn't really get over the idea that sometimes things didn't have ulterior motives. Their "year off" involved way too many missions to actually be called a vacation.]

[Ariadne smiled at that. It had been a while since she'd been on a vacation and it's nice to hear that every now and then, Dick can relax.]

Where did you travel to?

[She found that they were approaching a cliff that overlooked a small waterfall. (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3100/2418532676_d61fe88069.jpg) It was likely perhaps only thirty feet up from the pond below and the architect leaned over a little to look at it.]

[He chuckled. It had been a good idea, initially, yeah, and parts of it had been fun, but it definitely hadn't been just them sitting around on a beach or something.]

Where didn't we travel is probably a better question. Mostly Europe, Asia and the Middle East, but we were gone for a year.

[He copied her position to examine the waterfall before adding playfully:] Don't fall in. I'd hate to have to come rescue you.

[Ariadne tucked her hair behind her ear and glanced over at him with a smirk.]

We could climb down.

If you insist.

[And Dick immediately starts climbing down. At least he already told you he was good at this kind of thing.]

[Ariadne gapes for a couple moments, beaming at him before following him down. It wasn't too complicated as there were enough large rocks for someone relatively inexperienced to manage. She paused and looked over her shoulder at him, grinning broadly. This whole day so far had been simply amazing.]

So you do like extreme sports.

I've been climbing on stuff since before I could walk. It's practically second nature.

[He dusted off his hands once he was back on relatively level ground, looking at the waterfall with interest. He wasn't even out of breath.] It's beautiful.

[Ariadne took a little longer to finish climbing down and she quickly began to pull off her shoes. Nothing like seeing it up closer, right? She splashed out into the water and it almost immediately went up to her knees.]

Come on.

[He immediately kicked off his own shoes and socks and joined her, not really caring as his jeans got soaked. It wasn't like he didn't have other pairs of pants, and this was too fun to pass up.]

You ever been to Hawaii?

[She shook her head as she continued to wade deeper into the water. She didn't care much either, the experience was what mattered and she could use the dryers later.]

Have you?

Yeah. Not super often, but I've been. Really nice waterfalls there. That is, when it's not a dry season, anyway.

[Even if he still sort of preferred the city, he wasn't going to lie about nature being just as much fun to explore.]

[She paused for a moment before taking an adventurous leap into the deeper water, which was deep enough for her to need to swim. Maybe she could think of Hawaii the next time they came here. There were mountains for rock climbing in Hawaii, right?]

It's always the wet season in France. Rarely stops raining.

[It was at this close range to the waterfall that she thought she could see something behind it. An opening of some kind.]

[Dick sort of hesitated for a moment before following her, stopping to pull off his worn out baseball shirt before following her into the deeper water. It was a quasi stupid move, in that while swimming with a shirt on was going to be heavy and unfun, but now as soon as he got out of the water, she'd be able to see his pretty impressive collection of scars.

But he didn't really always think these things through too much anyway, so he didn't worry about it too much. Besides, his attention had been attracted by the same opening Ariadne had noticed, and he looked at the waterfall curiously.]

Sounds like a lot of fun.

[Ariadne at first didn't notice that he'd paused so he could take off his shirt. When she glanced behind her, he was close already. The warm water was delightful and she drifted closer to the waterfall, cocking her head to the side as she some of the spray from the waterfall got in her eyes. When she replied, she was more than a little distracted.]

I love it there.

[He laughed, regarding the waterfall with the well masked suspicion of someone who had been raised by an incredibly paranoid person who over prepared for every possible crisis situation, and Dick wasn't going to get crushed by rocks coming down over the waterfall in CES if he could help it. That would just be a damned embarrassing way to go. Still, it was pretty, and he was still pretty relaxed, so he just smirked over at Ariadne.]

If a place's got horrible weather, but you still like it, must mean they're doing something right.

If we have another modern port, I'll show you Paris.

[Ariadne briefly smiled back at him before doing a double take. Oh he's not wearing a shirt. Oh and he's quite, quite fit. Back to the waterfall now. She's almost directly beneath it and carefully reaching for the opening, again having little care for her personal safety, leaving all that paranoia to him.]

[And he's hanging back a little, still regarding the waterfall curiously, but eventually he swum a little closer, trying not to get in her way, and just as curious about the opening as she was, honestly.]

Be careful.

[It had been blurted out without a lot of thought to it, and he brushed off the warning with a small smile, but... didn't mean they shouldn't be careful.]
