Dick Grayson
29 July 2012 @ 04:11 pm

[Dick is walking through a crowded hallway when he makes his post, because the thought just occurred to him as he was leaving transfiguration class and hey, why not poll people instead of dragging out the yearly calendar when he gets back to his room.]

Hey, does anyone know when Parent's weekend this year is? I feel like that should be coming up soon, but I totally don't remember. [And knowing about it sooner rather than later will mean making sure his dad can actually show up, because being an attorney is apparently a huge time sink, who knew.]

Does anyone want to play some Quidditch after classes are done? I've got an extra quaffle around, and no team's using the field for practice, so. Could be fun.

[Private to Tim]

It's been an hour, do you need a rescue?

[Open Spam for the Quidditch Field]

[After school, Dick has decided to head down to the Quidditch field for some practice, which mostly means doing a lot of show offy tricks in the air because lol no one to pass the quaffle around with yet, and tossing it through the goal posts and diving to catch it at dangerously high speeds gets old after a while. So, come down for a game/some trash talk/mocking him for being a show off/saying hi, what have you.]

[ooc: Dick is a sixteen year old senior in Monkey, who plays Quidditch and is generally a very talented student. He tries to look out for the younger kids and the weird kids like Kovacs and doesn't take shit from bullies, which has earned him a goody two shoes reputation that he doesn't really bother trying to deny. I'll be replying with [personal profile] theboywonder.]

[Dick's been pretty radio silent outside of his circle of close friends for a while now. He's been brooding and collecting himself together since Gotham port, spending time patching up the Batsuit and re-equipping it because something tells him he'll probably wind up needing it again sooner rather than later.

The only reason he's really making a post now is it's Father's Day, and he feels like he just needs to say something about Bruce, however tangentially, even if he plans on remembering John Grayson privately, because that's just a minefield of angst he doesn't need other people poking at.]

You know, I've said it before, I'm sure I'll say it again, and I'm sure most of you don't really care or won't agree with me, but I really don't resent the life I ended up with. I got so lucky to have things happen the way they did, because someone cared enough about some orphaned kid to take me in, and stuff like that flood - no matter how bad it actually was - usually makes me realize we should all probably acknowledge it more. No matter how bad things get, there's always ways things could have been worse.

Not that I really needed this place to rub that in any more than it already has, but I guess it can't really be helped.

[Private to Tim]

[Dick clicks on the video for this, so that mid way through the sentence, he can dramatically hold up the picture Superboy drew him of Tim's reboot costume.]

Also, you're never allowed to judge me about my fashion choices ever again. [C:]

[Dick clicks on the camera, and he, too, is proudly wearing a new red and green Christmas sweater. He's also considerably shorter and younger looking than usual, but does not seem all that confused or bothered by what's going on.]

Tim, this is so cool, you have to come see this! [He holds up two Batman action figures, complete with awesome grappling hook accessories and things to play fight with because action figures are excellent like that. One is of Bruce as Batman and the other - little does Dick actually know - is the uniform he'll be wearing as Batman, which is subtly different from what he's used to Bruce wearing.]

I didn't even know they made stuff like this! [Or if they did, it wasn't really accurate, since the Gotham vigilantes tend to stay out of the limelight and therefore usually any "Batman" stuff produced was kind of majorly lacking compared to this stuff.]

I don't know why there are two Batmans, though. I mean, the costume's a little different on this one, but it doesn't look like what he wears. [Added quickly:] I think. [Since he's never seen Batman before right. :V]

... Hey, Rorschach are you okay? Let me know where you are. [And if you're affected. :c

AND OH MY GOD BEST IDEA EVER:]
Jim, do you still have your action figures? [Don't judge me I might kind of want to play with them. :c]

And for anyone who's not sure where you are, everything's going to be fine. If you need anything, let someone know and one of us will help you, I promise.

[ooc: Dick is going to be basically acting like his fourteen year old self, but remembers the Barge and knows there's a flood going on and he's affected. Despite the icons, he is not dressed in the Robin suit, I just love the art from Year One and had to use them instead of pb icons. :c]

Bruce is gone.

[ooc: Oh my god, I'm sorry for all the spam, guys. I didn't expect all this stuff to happen. Dick will be way quieter in coming days. <3]

So, Bruce is in a coma again. I'm bringing him up to the infirmary, even though he's probably just going to escape again as soon as he wakes up.

[Warden Filter]

I know a while ago, there was a lot of talk about warden self defense classes. Did anything actually come of that?

[Private to Tim and Steph]

How are you doing? You've been a little quiet lately.

I know everyone's already said their pieces about port, but you know? Ones like that really aren't so bad. Aside from the possibility of falling overboard and getting assimilated into the world we're visiting, it's basically just like going to a city you've never been to before. There are places you should avoid, and places that are perfectly safe.

I know we all joke a lot about Gotham being a terrible place to live because it's America's murder capital and Bludhaven wasn't much better, but there are good parts to it too. There are these Cuban meat sandwiches at a place called Ibano's, there's near perfect acoustics at Jonus Theater, I could probably go on forever, and while I'm not really going to recommend it as a vacation spot to anyone soon - because again, murder capital of America - as long as you know what you're doing and are careful about what parts you wander into, you'll probably be okay.

[Filtered to Friends - if you think you're on it, you are.]

How's everyone handling our week of relative quiet? Anyone up for doing something? Actually having something to do in port kind of spoiled me for a few days.

[Private to Bruce, backdated to right after port]

So, you know what Saturday was?

[Dick looks maybe a couple years older than his Barge counterpart - probably somewhere between twenty four and twenty seven - although he still speaks with a clearly Yankee accent, and looks pretty clean cut and dorky organized for someone who just rode into town.

But Marshal Grayson does his job and does it well, so he cuts right down to business without much preamble.]

I'm Marshal Richard Grayson. My partner, Jim Kirk, and I are in town after a wanted murderer by the name of Henry Rogers.

This man - [And here he holds up a flyer with a rough approximation of Hoffman's Western identity, although noticeably lacking some scars and his mustache, so there's not a lot of resemblance] is a former U.S. Marshal like myself and Marshal Kirk. He's wanted for the murders of several men from here to Houston, including a judge, and it's our job to bring him back in.

He's extremely dangerous, and he's not afraid to hurt anyone who gets in his way. Anyone found to be harboring the fugitive will answer to the law, and be similarly brought to justice.

[He puts the flyer away, and finally manages a smile.]

On a less serious note, am I right in remembering Tim Grayson and Bruce Wayne are still employed with the sheriff's office in this town?

[ooc: Dick is Tim's biological sibling, Bruce's adopted kid, and has been a Marshal for three years. He served with the Union during the war (with Kirk), but the two were pulled out of the service for the marshals by Christopher Pike. Ramen doesn't want anyone immediately putting two and two together about Hoffman, so please don't have your character go HEY I KNOW THAT GUY just yet.

Feel free to spam him around town! If there's somewhere you want him to be, I can come up with a reason for him being there! c:]

I guess that could have been worse.

Anyone up for doing something?

[Private to Tim]

So now I have a stuffed elephant in my room.

[Private to Wally]

You seriously didn't know I was seven years younger then you?

[Private to Hayley]

I know this is going to sound weird, but thanks for lying about knowing my dad. Seriously. It was really nice to hear.

[Private to Mal]

[Dick was seriously considering just... pretending all that didn't happen. But. He was raised to be polite.]

I just wanted to say thanks again.

[Private to Bruce]

[The feed clicks on to this song playing with maybe some Dick is thoroughly amused by how clever he is chuckling in the background.]

The hardest part of the job is always realizing that you can't prepare for everything. You can't be everywhere at once. And you can't always save the people you care about.

I'm not just talking about here, or about being a cop, but really, no matter what you do, if there's some level of danger posed to your or others, or even if there isn't, you're going to eventually have to face what it's like to lose someone you care about.

And you never feel more powerless then when someone you love gets caught in the crossfire of some psycho with a gun. Or a crowbar.

I've seen a lot of violence. And I've lost a lot of people. And it never gets any easier feeling like you failed, even when there's logically nothing you could have done to prevent what happened, because you cared and you should have been there for them. And honestly? I'm tired of it. I'm tired of seeing people I love die, or get ripped apart or tortured or crippled or blown up because something went wrong.

So when you can do something to help? When you can intervene and you can do some good and maybe save someone, even if you're putting your life on the line? You do it. It's never been complicated for me.

[Strikes readable by Bats minus Jason (sorry buddy :c). The whole post is public for maybe five minutes before he deletes it, but feel free to assume your character caught it before he did.]

[Private to Bruce]

Can we talk?

[Private to Tim]

How are you doing?

[Private to Costigan]

You want to go for a run or something? I promise I won't break anything or try to hold your hand.

[There's a short pause between the feed clicking on and Dick speaking.]

My parents were murdered when I was eight. I was there when it happened. It was... [He takes a slow breath.] It felt like my whole life was just falling apart and I had no idea what was going to happen or where I was supposed to go or how I was supposed to live without the two most important people in my life.

But I got lucky, because someone was there that night who knew what it was like to have their parents taken away from them. He took me in, gave me a home and support and made life feel like it was worth living again. I know I got lucky. A lot of kids... A lot of kids lose parents and just end up going through foster home after foster home, and if Bruce hadn't been there, that's probably what would have happened to me. I would have been alone and lost, with no idea what I was supposed to do with my life.

Instead, I got a family. They've helped me become the person I am today and I can't thank them enough for it. I've had an amazing life, even if it's not always sunshine and rainbows, and I love my family more then anything.

... I'll always miss my parents. That hurt never goes away, and there isn't a day that goes by where I don't think about them and wish I could talk to them just one more time, but I...

[...]

I wouldn't trade what I have now for the world.

[... Oh crap. Didn't mean to say any of that out loud, to everyone. Fuck you, floods. :|]

So, Wally's been asleep for the last four...ish days. This isn't totally out of the question for him? But I'm starting to get a little concerned this is one of those comas everyone loves complaining about versus him just running out of steam for a few days. I've been monitoring his vitals and stuff, so, I don't think it's anything serious, but if someone could come in and check on him anyway, that would be great.

[Private to Tim]

I'm guessing you noticed our latest arrival.

[Private to Costigan]

So you know how I sort of ran off last night without a ton of explanation?
